Offended?

by Hazel Straub

Offended by others? It is easy to take offense, if one does not watch their heart. Offense when brooded over, like a laying hen, will hatch bitterness. Offended people build fences that they will not go across for reconciliation with whom they are angry. Anger, when fed by pride and selfishness, festers from our own wrong motives, into bitterness because our thoughts revolve around our hurts and our rights. Instead search your heart before you go to sleep so your will not allow the devil to gain a foothold in your soul (your mind, will, and emotions). Bitter roots give the enemy of our soul the right to occupy and implant his lies attached to our sinful holding onto offenses. Bless others, pray for them, and remember how much Yahweh through Jesus has forgiven you, so it is easy to let go of the offense.

Embrace the power of salvation’s full deliverance, like a helmet to protect your thoughts from lies. And take the mighty razor-sharp Spirit-sword of the spoken word of God. Pray passionately in the Spirit, as you constantly intercede with every form of prayer at all times. Pray the blessings of God upon all his believers. (Ephesians 6:17 TPT)

May we never forget that Yahweh works wonders
for every one of his devoted lovers.
And this is how I know that he will answer my every prayer.
Tremble in awe before the Lord, and do not sin against him.
Be still upon your bed and search your heart before him.
(Psalms 4:3-4 TPT)

With tender humility and quiet patience, always demonstrate gentleness and generous love toward one another, especially toward those who may try your patience. (Ephesians 4:2 TPT)

But don’t let the passion of your emotions lead you to sin! Don’t let anger control you or be fuel for revenge, not for even a day. (Ephesians 4:26 TPT)

Lay aside bitter words, temper tantrums, revenge, profanity, and insults. (Ephesians 4:31 TPT)

An understanding person demonstrates patience,
for mercy means holding your tongue.
When you are insulted,
be quick to forgive and forget it,
for you are virtuous when you overlook an offense. (Proverbs 19:11 TPT)

  3. Do you think that offence necessarily mean getting angry? Can’t you get angry without being offended first?

    • Ran, yes you can get angry for a righteous cause and let it go by the end of the day. Many get angry and hold on to the offense. They do not let it go. This is the reason we need to examine our heart before going to sleep.
Jesus got angry in the temple and drove out the money changers and ones selling sacrificial animals, saying they had made his Father’s house a den of thieves. (Matthew 21:12-13; Mark 11:15-18) He did not hold onto the anger. His was a righteous anger that he let the anger go. Jesus is the example of love and forgiveness.

  5. I always feel that anger is a powerful feeling that can drive us to do the right thing. Hatred, on the other hand is destructive to others but most of all to ourselves.

    • Although anger is a powerful feeling, it is not always healthy when held onto and when it is used to intimidate others to get them to comply. One angry man I knew, broke his wife’s arm for overspending and put bruises on his son who was pulled out of bed and kicked with boots in the face and all over his body. Anger according to the Bible has much to say. Such as not going to bed angry. Not letting your anger rule you but you ruling your anger. The post, quotes a number of Bible verses about anger and there were many others, I did not have time to cover.

      • When we believe in Jesus and forgive those who hurt us and let the offense go, we will not experience wrath. We are forgiven much and need to give the same forgiveness to others. Then we can sleep at night and will not grow bitter. No need for God’s wrath, when we search our hearts before sleep each night and forgive!

  7. thank you!
God’s forgiveness truly sets us free as we forgive and don’t retain the sin against us (John 20:23) by the Holy Spirit, as we let go and let God take care of the offender, the offense, the offensive, give recompense, and vindicate those who forgive as God forgave us. I love the Lord’s Prayer, asking our Holy Eternal Father for Thy kingdom come and Thy will be done on earth AS it is in heaven into every situation; asking for Daily Bread of Life, Living Bread and Living Water, all we need as we forgive as we are forgiven, delivered from evil, giving ALL glory to God!

    • Yes, Yvonne, there are so many Scriptures telling us to forgive and let God deal with the offender. Not retaining any offense is so key, by our will with the help of Holy Spirit is key. The Lord’s Prayer is key in having things as it is in Heaven including forgiving others. It needs to be our lifestyle, so God gets all the glory! Blessings of the Kingdom of Heaven on earth in your life!

  8. We need to always remember this! Thanks for the reminder. Many times it has been hard to forgive, to let bitterness grip me, but I strive to forgive because that is the way to freedom! Thanks.

    • You are welcome, busy lady! When we extend the same forgiveness we receive to others, it is much easier to see our need to release it. We all need mercy and grace! When we let go, God is free to deal with the other person. Also we can sleep well!

  9. Well said my friend!

If we don’t search through our heart and seek God while he is there amongst us, we will still be succumbed to the hurt, and pain that caused anger to destroy loved ones and even ourselves. Thank you for sharing with us the true definition of offending people and how we should take heed of the warning signs of anger you mentioned.

    Blessings! XOXO 😀
