In Alaska, winter is here with snow, frigid temperatures, and darkness. However, the darkness allows the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) to be seen and enjoyed. Although they are present in the summer, they cannot be detected by the eyes, due to all the daylight. Now in the dark months they shine, dance across the sky like a moving curtain, filled with color and light. They demonstrate that only in darkness can they be seen and then transform the atmosphere, with an intriguing light.
So too, we as believers in Jesus, are lights in the darkness. The contrast of light in darkness changes the atmosphere. People are attracted to light. If there is a fire, everyone will come to get warm. When the light shines from each believer, others come to the light, love, and life that shines. This light attracts those who are cold, lost in the darkness and without hope. Instead of cursing the darkness, let your light shine, and transform the darkness! Shine!
“Your lives light up the world. For how can you hide a city that stands on a hilltop? And who would light a lamp and then hide it in an obscure place? Instead, it’s placed where everyone in the house can benefit from its light. So don’t hide your light! Let it shine brightly before others, so that your commendable works will shine as light upon them, and then they will give their praise to your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16 TPT)

Beautiful blog post and analogy. Gorgeous image. I would so love to see the Northern Lights. We almost thought last week may have been the week in Southern Ontario. Though a few people saw them, I was not as lucky.

The Northern Lights are not easily forgotten. Perhaps they will show up again in Southern Ontario.
Thank you! Blessings!

Yes, Alaska is a very special place, it is huge about 1/5 the physical size of the lower 48 states. It has different climates and temperatures but is unlike any other place. Here it gets to -60 F on occasion and up to about 90 F in the summer for a few days. We get 3 hours 21 minutes of daylight in the southeast to the southwest on the shortest daylight day of the year but light all night in the summer. Blessings to you!

What a beautiful metaphor! I wonder if God created the Northern Lights just to show us this! It is such a potent picture of us, as God’s children, in this world.

Yes, it is a prophetic picture of us being lights in this world. God is very creative and delights in creativity. The Northern Lights are just one example that illustrates a spiritual truth. Blessings, Tressa!
