Salt Of The Earth

by Hazel Straub

Jesus said believers in him, were the salt of the earth. Salt preserves food and keeps it from spoiling. It enhances the flavor of the food. Additionally, salt can make one thirsty. Salt in biblical times was precious and used to pay wages (salary).

When Christians, walk close with Yahweh (the covenant keeping God, who is always with them), their presence preserves society. Believers add flavor, as they show Yahweh’s love, compassion, and mercy. Their peace, while walking through the storms of life, make others thirsty to know God. Their caring presence is valuable. However, when they merely go through the motions, have no relationship with Yahweh, they have lost their salty flavor and the ability to preserve their community.

Lord, I thirst for more of you, today. Make me salty, with your presence.

You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its flavor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled on by people. (Matthew 5:13 NET)
