Happy Pentecost!

by Hazel Straub

Happy Pentecost, 50 days since Passover, when Jesus our Passover Lamb died for us and took our sins on himself. What we could not do he did for us. (50 represents Jubilee lost inheritances restored, debts cancelled and slaves set free.) Redemption is a free gift for all who receive Jesus. On the Feast, 120 people were waiting and praying to God.

On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. (Acts 2:1-4 NLT)

The Holy Spirit changed the believers and filled them with boldness. They went outside and a crowd gathered. People there in Jerusalem for the Feast heard the sounds and gathered to hear the believers in Jesus, speaking in the hearers’ native languages. Peter, who had 50 days earlier, been fearful and denied knowing Jesus, boldly preached the good news of Jesus.  The baptism of the Holy Spirit transformed Peter and the others, making them bold for Christ. As a result 3,000 people gave their lives to the Lord Jesus. Holy Spirit lives inside of us and changes us from the inside!

  5. Amen! “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Jesus still asks the Father, who still sends, the same Holy Spirit to empower His disciples.

  6. Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost is perhaps the most powerful sermon after Christ’s resurrection. I am amazed that just being forgiven and given a second chance had such a powerful effect on Peter. He speaks so boldly, doing just what Christ Jesus asked him to do, feeding and caring for the young and old sheep of God’s pasture. I love the story. Peter is an amazing example of second and third chances to do God’s will.
