You know what? Change doesn’t always feel good. We want our circumstances and other people to change. But what about changing ourselves? We see a flaw in someone and pray that their attitude or their character changes. We even try to change them, by offering our own suggestions or even by saying, “The Lord said.” (Sometimes it is him, other times it is our flesh.) When they don’t quickly change, as we desire, we cancel them. Who are we? We are not God! We pray for hours that this or that person would change for the better, but ignore our own flaws. Criticism and pointing out the failures and shortcomings in others, can cause us to miss or ignore our own. This bad habit will destroy, if it is not controlled.
True change starts with our way of thinking and understanding that we are not God and we can’t change people. Instead of criticizing people all the time, because either you’re a perfectionist or you want them to become like you, try loving them into change. When Bionce’ wrote the song “Flaws And All,” she was being prophetic but didn’t know it. When you change into a new pair of clothes, you take off the old ones and put on the new ones.
The key is “You.” When “you” begin to stop trying to change yourself, then God’s grace comes and he gives you merciful grace to change. Pray: “God, instead of me trying to change others, change my viewpoint. Change my perspective of the person or situation. Lord, change my heart.”
Transforming change begins in your heart. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. (Matthew 12:34) You change your thinking, you change your heart, you change your confession, and a birth of new change occurs.
What are you thinking?
